Annabel Toogood

Annabel Toogood - Managing Director

New Zealand Air Ambulance Service Managing Director Annabel Toogood has been working in the air ambulance sector for over 7 years and has extensive experience in mission management, logistics, inter hospital transfers and coordinating international retrievals and repatriations. Annabel leads a passionate team of professionals who are commmited to providing the highest standard of aeromedical care.

Dr Shay McGuiness

Dr Shay McGuiness - Medical Director

Dr Shay McGuinness is an Intensivist and Director of Research at the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Auckland City Hospital; and Clinical Director of Air Ambulance Services, Auckland District Health Board. Dr McGuinness is actively involved in large scale clinical trials and is the New Zealand representative of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre, Monash University Advisory Board. His research interests include acute kidney injury, fluid and oxygen therapy. Dr McGuinness trained in Anaesthesia and Intensive care in Sheffield, United Kingdom.

Dr Ross Freebairn (MBchB, Dip Obst, FANZCA, FRCPE, FCIM)

Dr Ross Freebairn (MBchB, Dip Obst, FANZCA, FRCPE, FCIM) - Medical Director

Ross Freebairn is a full time Intensive Care Consultant and the Associate Dean (Otago University) at Hawke’s Bay Hospital; Medical Director of NZ Air Ambulance Service; Past President of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (of Australia and New Zealand). He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland. Dr. Freebairn serves as vice President on the Council of the Asian and Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine. He is a founding member of the BASIC steering group and is actively involved in courses running in NZ, Australia, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Pacific and Europe.

Rod Gunn

Rod Gunn - Chief Pilot

NZAAS Chief Pilot Rod Gunn has 35 years experience in the aviation industry including 20 years of general aviation and 15 years airline experience. He also has extensive experience within New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific. Rod has 20 years involvement in Aircrew Checking and Training, and is a Flight Operations Manager Part 125.

Angela Coward - Senior Flight Nurse

Angela Coward - Senior Flight Nurse

Angela is the Senior Flight Nurse/Clinical Coordinator for New Zealand Air Ambulance in Auckland. She completed her Nursing training in Nelson and then moved to Australia where she gained experience in critical care, emergency, trauma and remote and rural nursing. Angela has been a flight nurse for the previous nine years, with the past seven years being full time in Darwin, Australia and more recently in New Zealand. Angela gained her post graduate Certificate of Critical Care Nursing at the Alfred Hospital in conjunction with La Trobe University Victoria and her Post Graduate certificate in Aeromedical Retrieval with JCU in Townsville. 

Jess Birchall

Jess Birchall - Senior Operations Coordinator/Commerical Flight Nurse

Jess is a registered nurse, with several years experience working in acute care areas of hospitals in Australia and NZ, and has a background of coordinating in the medical assistance industry. Jess enjoys the variety and challenges that this role offers, and is thrilled to be a part of the NZAAS team, involved in this exciting, valuble and rewarding profession.

Rowan works as a loadmaster on PICU/NICU missions, as well as an aircraft engineer.

Kyle Thomsen

Kyle Thomsen

I started flying in 2008 flying initially as an instructor in New Zealand before moving to Perth, Australia where I worked as a aerobatic charter pilot. My career has included flying night freight and flying in Vanuatu during cyclone Pam to assist in aid throughout the Islands. I started at Skyline Aviation in march 2016. I find the role rewarding and enjoy working as part of an aeromedical team. My interests outside of flying are getting out fishing or hunting throughout New Zealand.

Matt Judd

Matt Judd - First Officer Nextant 400XT Jet

I have been flying with NZAAS and Skyline Aviation for over three years. I am a Kingair rated Captain and a Nextant jet First Officer. I have an ATPL and over 3500 hours flying having come from corporate jet previously and the airlines before that. I like flying air ambulance because it's a rewarding team career and it offers wide variety. I am married with three children.

Andrea Chapman

I have worked for Skyline for over 6 years and my work here is always varied and interesting.

I oversee the administration function of the business  including payroll, HR, data entry into our flight software system and assisting in the managment of ourquality and safety system.

Emma Pountney

Emma Pountney - Flight Nurse

Emma is full time flight nurse with NZAAS. She joins us from having spent the last 8 years in PICU at Starship Hospital, and prior to that was at Greenlane in cardiac services. Emma has experience working overseas in France, Australia and the UK.
